Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA)

MCSA is an advanced diagnostic tool in the cloud-based IIoT platform ALERT that identifies problems in induction motors and their driven mechanical systems early on.

MCSA utilizes motor current spectrum analysis to diagnose faults. Current transformers acquire signals from a critical induction motor by using a data acquisition card or device without interrupting production. The raw signals are then transformed to a frequency domain signature for analysis. Specific harmonics present in the spectrum help to detect potential motor faults.

MCSA is similar to the check-engine light that signals malfunctions in a car’s power train that demand immediate attention.

Motor fault conditions detected

  • Stator winding anomaly

  • Broken rotor bar

  • Defective bearing

  • Abnormal torque oscillation

  • Shaft eccentricity- static, dynamic

The MCSA Advantage

  • Detects motor faults and load anomalies early,

  • Reduces unplanned downtime and production loss.

  • Minimizes rush repairs and controls maintenance costs through timely action.

  • Extends machinery lifespan and enhances reliability.

  • Cost-effective, as it does not require expensive sensors and wiring.
